RAISE THE FLAG FUND – A GARY COFFEY MEMORIAL

Purpose: To provide funds to support and promote the flying of American flags to enhance and distinguish our communities.

Gary Coffey lived his life to enhance the lives of others. He provided 60 years of continuous, active support and involvement in the growth of Edwardsville/Glen Carbon and surrounding communities. His service to others and business-oriented activities enhanced our residential community’s quality of life, and his non-business activities similarly enhanced our business community. Gary’s devotion and generosity made a positive and lasting impact on numerous civic groups, the development of SIUE, and the local law profession.

One of Gary’s visions was to offer a fund to encourage local businesses, organizations, and citizens to fly the American flag as a symbol of pride in our community and country, and to honor past and present service members. The Raise The Flag Fund supports new flag installations, and promotes flying flags proudly for all to enjoy.

Gary joined the Air Force Reserve in 1950 while an undergrad at University of Illinois. After graduating from University of Illinois Law School, he proudly served active duty in the Marine Corps, and continued in the Marine Corps Reserve ultimately resigning his commission as a Major in 1970. He was patriotic and well-read on the U.S. Constitution striving to live by and educate others on its principles.

As a founding director of the Edwardsville Community Foundation, Gary served on the board for nearly a decade, and remained a member of ECF’s Gifts and Funds Committee until a month before his death at age 86. He was also the first recipient of the Edwardsville/Glen Carbon Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award.
