Dave Rieger Athletic Spirit Will Live On Through Edwardsville Community Foundation
7/24/21 The Edwardsville Community Foundation (ECF) is pleased to announce the Dave Rieger Golf Scholarship. This $1,000 award will go to a graduating senior at Edwardsville High School, Father McGivney Catholic School or Metro East Lutheran High School who is a member of the girls or boys high school golf team and plans to continue school at an accredited university, college, trade or vocational school in the coming fall as a full-time student.
ECF is thrilled to offer this award for local graduates and golf athletes in memory of Mr. Dave Rieger, 1954-2020, a 1972 EHS graduate and stalwart athlete in football and baseball.
After completing his college career on the pitching mound, Dave became an avid golfer, competing in tournaments throughout the Midwest and playing countless rounds on golf courses throughout Southern Illinois and the greater St. Louis area. “Dave believed that golf is a perfect sport to create personal integrity, promote a healthy lifestyle and enable athletes of all ages to enjoy the camaraderie of friends and family in an athletic environment,” Yvonne Rieger, Dave’s wife, said.
Other criteria for the award include demonstrating a strong work ethic, determination to succeed and the ability to get along well with others on and off the golf course. “Dave enjoyed mentoring young athletes and offering words of encouragement and advice,” Rieger added. “We are beyond honored to help a student who is passionate about the sport that Dave loved so much.”
Proceeds from the upcoming Dave Rieger Golf Scramble at Timber Lakes Golf Course on Saturday, July 31 will help establish the fund. For information about the Scramble, contact Coonie Kueker at 618-660-9721.
